スピーキングテスト、パート１〜３の特徴

今回は、IELTS のスピーキングテストの３つのパートについて詳しく見ていきます。これらの３つのパートではそれぞれ異なる課題が与えられ、英語のスピーキング能力が試されます。
まず始めに、試験官は自己紹介をした後で、受験者の名前を聞き、写真付きの受験者カードの提示を求めてきます。パート１では、試験官は４〜５分の間に受験者個人や家族のことについて一般的な質問を多くしてきます。質問される可能性のある話題は次のようなものです：
�ー�験者の家族、家、住んでいる地域、出身国について
�⊆�験者の趣味、興味、余暇の過ごし方について
��受験者の仕事、研究分野について
�ぜ�験者の旅行経験について
�ゼ�験者の好き嫌いについて
パート１で取り上げられる話題は受験者の生活に関係した事柄ですので、受験者にとって話しやすい話題のはずです。このパートは受験者が試験官に自分がどれくらいすらすらと英語を話せるかを示す絶好の機会になりますので、できるだけたくさん答えるようにしましょう。
日本人の IELTS 受験者によく見受けられるスピーキングテストでの過ちは、質問された話題を膨らませることができないことです。
例えば、試験官の質問 "Where do you live?" に対して、"I live in Kichijoji." とだけ回答して終えているような場合です。この "I live in Kichijoji." という答えは文法的には正しいのですが、残念ながら、短過ぎますし、ある意味不適切な回答であり、もっと伝えられる情報があるはず。もっとよい答え方としては、
"I live in Kichijoji, which is in west Tokyo and is about 15 minutes from Shinjuku by train. It is well known for shopping and restaurants, and there is a beautiful park there."
このように答えれば、吉祥寺についてよく知らない試験官に、吉祥寺の地理的位置や特徴を十分に伝えられることになります。それと同時に、流ちょうさであるとか、自分の語い力を示すことにもつながります。スピーキングテストでは終始、このように話題をいつも膨らませるように気を配って答える必要があります。
ちなみに、話題を膨らませるには、現在の生活を過去の生活やこれからの生活と比較してみるという方法もあります。例えば、
"Nowadays, I live in Kichijoji. However, I was brought up on Sado Island and moved to Kichijoji when I entered university. While it is a nice place to live at the moment, I am planning on moving in the next 12 months."
パート２では、試験官が選んだ話題について、１〜２分でスピーチすることが求められます。スピーチをする前に１分与えられますので、必要があればメモを取ったりして準備します。一度受験者がスピーチを始めたら、その間試験官は口を挟みませんが、２分経つとスピーチが終わっていなくても、やめるように指示してきます。パート２のまとめとして、スピーチが終わった後に、試験官は同じ話題に関して短い質問をしてきます。
パート２の具体例：
Describe a holiday experience you particularly liked. You should say: when / where you went, who you went with, what you did, and explain why you enjoyed this holiday.
パート２は４つの項目（この例では、いつどこへ、誰と、何をしに、なぜ）に関する情報を発表する、短いプレゼンテーションだと思ってください。ですから、うまく話を切り出す必要があります。例えば、次のような表現が役に立つでしょう。
"I'm going to tell you about ... ."
"I'd like to talk about / describe ... ."
"... is a particular holiday I really enjoyed."
具体例にある４つの項目すべてに言及する必要があるので、それぞれの項目をどうやって話し出すか考えなくてはなりません。例えば、
"The place that I went to was ... ."（場所）
"While travelling with friends is enjoyable, on this holiday I went by myself."（誰と）
"I had the chance to do many things during this holiday, for example, ... ."（何を）
"One of the reasons why I enjoyed this holiday was ... ."（理由）
これらの表現を参考に回答してみましょう。以下は回答例で、太字で示されているところが最低限必要な個所になります。
回答例："I'd like to talk about a three-week holiday in Australia that was really enjoyable. The places I went to in Australia were Melbourne, Sydney and Byron Bay, and I travelled there in May 2006, just over a year ago. While travelling with friends is a great experience, on this holiday I went by myself because my friends in Tokyo did not have the time or money to go with me. However, I had a fantastic time travelling around these places in Australia. I had the chance to do many things during this holiday. For example, I was able to try surfing for the first time when I was in Sydney. It was very difficult. What's more, I saw fairy penguins outside of Melbourne, and they were so beautiful. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take photos of them. One of the reasons why I enjoyed this holiday was that it was my first time in Australia and the first time I travelled alone. So it was an exciting challenge for me. As a result of being by myself, I was able to meet many other people travelling around, and could make new friends from different countries. I still keep in contact with these people. By far the greatest moment on this trip was seeing the penguins walk up the beach to their nests in the sand dunes. It was really amazing to see."
このパートで失敗してしまう理由として多いのが、時間切れで最後まできちんと答えられなかったというものです。課題に書かれた４つの項目の中で、最後の項目が最も重要であることが多いので、くれぐれも最後の項目まで時間内に答えるようにしましょう。
パート３では、試験官はパート２で選んだ話題に関連した質問をいくつかしてきますので、受験者はそれに答え、４〜５分間討論することが求められます。討論で重要なことは、まず自分の意見をはっきりと述べ、それを支持する根拠や具体例を示しつつ、理路整然と論理を展開することです
下記の回答例では、覚えて損をしない文と、文をつなぐさまざまな連結語、表現、構文を太字で示しました。重要なことは、同じ単語、表現や構文を繰り返し使うのではなく、できるだけいろいろな単語、表現や構文を使用することです。
パート３の具体例：
テーマ：The Internet and shopping
質問（Q）：Why do you think people use the Internet for shopping?
回答例（A）："I think convenience is one of the main reasons people use the Internet for shopping. For example, people can use the Internet to shop at any time and place they choose. In addition, many people find it very convenient to have purchases delivered to their home address instead of going to a shop to buy the same goods."
Q：Why doesn't everyone use it in this way?
A："Actually, I believe some people are reluctant to shop online as they prefer to see the goods in a shop before they decide to make a purchase. One problem with Internet shopping is that when the purchase arrives, the buyer may find the goods are not suitable. Furthermore, some people don't like to shop online due to security fears. By this I mean fears over the security of their credit card details."
Q：What kinds of things are easy to buy and sell online? Can you give some examples?
A："Basically, goods that are easy to buy and sell online include goods where no physical delivery is involved, such as holidays and other travel bookings. Also, goods such as books and CDs, where there is less need for the buyer to see the goods before purchasing, are easy to buy and sell online."
Q：Do you think shopping on the Internet will be more or less popular in the future? Why?
A："In my opinion, Internet shopping will become more popular. The reason why I think this is that future generations are likely to be more comfortable with using the technology so there will be a decrease in the number of people who are unsure of Internet shopping. As a consequence, Internet shopping might one day be the most common form of shopping."
パート３では広範囲に渡って、さまざまな話題について自分の意見を述べることが求められますので、そういった話題について英語で考えたり話したりした経験がない日本人にとっては、このパートは難しく感じられるでしょう。対策としては、例題を集め、それぞれの話題に関して尋ねられる可能性がある質問を書き出し、さらにその質問に対して考えられる限りの回答を英語で用意しておくことです。その回答をノートに書いてまとめておけば、ライティングのテスト対策にもなり、一石二鳥です。
しかし、ここで気を付けなくてはいけないのは、あらかじめ回答を丸暗記して試験に臨んではいけないということです。試験官には受験者があらかじめ回答を暗記してきたことを見抜く力があります。ですから、回答はあくまでもその場で考え、答えるようにしましょう。
