ICT is changing education

Technology is quickly changing the way students learn. Due to the internet,

students are exposed to many more educational opportunities. About twenty

yearsago, teachers used chalk and chalkboards. Teachers in the U.S. and other

countries say that chalk and chalkboards are quickly losing ground to marker

boards. Today teachers also use PowerPoint in classroom presentations.

University professor’s put their syllabi online as well as lecture notes and

even mp3 files. Students must know how to use e-mail, message boards, blogs,

streaming media etc. Online courses are offered through e-learning software

bothat public high schools and at the university level.

Public libraries are putting thousands of volumes of text in the form of novels,

encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographies online. With the expansion of online

learning, students will need to improve technological literacy.

The last sentence uses the form “need to” as “students will need to
improve.” This expresses obligation rather than recommendation:
In English there are several ways to express obligation: must, have to,
and should.

ＩＣＴが変える教育

テクノロジーは学生の学び方を急速に変えています。インターネットのお陰で、
学生の学習機会は大幅に増加しました。20年ぐらい前は、先生はチョークと
黒板を使っていました。アメリカなど諸外国の先生によると、チョークと黒板は
ホワイトボードにとってかわられようとしています。最近の先生はパワーポイントも
使って授業を行います。大学教授は、講義ノートやMP3ファイルと同様に、
シラバスもオンライン化しています。学生は、eメール、掲示板、ブログ、映像メディアなどの使い方を知らなければなりません。公立高校や大学レベルでは、e-ラーニングの
ソフトウエアを使って、オンラインコースを提供しています。図書館は小説、百科辞典、
辞書、伝記の膨大な量のテキストをオンライン化しています。オンラインでの学習の
普及に伴い、学生はコンピュータの知識・技能を向上させる必要に迫られています。
