★★★New Words from Science Fiction and Fantasy
This is Part One of a Ten Part Series on New words★★★
North Americans have an incredible interest in the genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Among television show producers, the gaming industry, and book publishers there is a thriving community of science fiction fans. From famous series like Star Wars and Star Trek to Harry Potter, there are millions of avid readers of Science Fiction and fantasy novels etc. Many new English vocabulary words come directly from this genre.
The word “Boswash” is a futuristic term referring to the “supercity” which stretches from Boston to Washington. With the vast expansion of cities, new words like this have increased. Metropolitan area is the other word which refers to a large city and just beyond its borders. Tokyo could be thought of as a “supercity".
The suffix “-con” is an abbreviation of convention. In this case, a convention is a gathering of thousands of gamers, artists, designers and celebrities who gather to discuss new books, art, movies, games, in the Science Fiction industry. For example, “Dragoncon” is a yearly convention of Science Fiction and Fantasy Fans from around the world gather once a year in August at the convention center in Atlanta, Georgia.
There they talk about things like LGM (Little Green Men), solar winds, speculative fiction, and of course RPG’s (role playing games). At such conventions, you may hear words like, “quidditch” which is the flying game played by Harry Potter, or “terraforming”, a method of remaking the atmosphere of other planets to make them ready for humans to live on.
