Daylight Saving Time★★★
The time difference between the east coast of the United States and Japan is 13 hours between April and November and from December to March it becomes 14 hours. The period when the United States sets its clock ahead one hour is known as Day Light Saving Time. Over 70 countries around the world have daylight saving time. In the U.S., 2:00AM was originally chosen as the changeover time. The reason for this was that restaurants and bars would not be inconvenienced. “Saving” is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells more about its nature. It is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Similar examples would be a “mind expanding book” or a “man eating tiger.” Saving is used in the same way as rescue, rather than as a savings account. Many reasons have been given to account for Day Light Saving Time. One that is the most common is that it reduces fuel consumption etc. Hokkaido has experimented with day light saving time but many believe that the benefit for the prefecture is minimal due its lower latitude than Europe or the U.S. For about four years, Japan had a daylight saving time starting in 1948 but it was repealed by the Diet in 1952. This year Day Light Saving time will begin on the second Sunday in March and end the first Sunday in November.
