★★★Spring is a time for awareness!★★★
Have you ever asked yourself, “what’s the quietest sound you can hear?”Your answer probably will not be the birds and that would be because of noise pollution. In the city or even in the countryside, noise is a ubiquitous(どこにでもある) part of any industrialized country. According to the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health, 75% of farm workers have some type of hearing problem due to long-term exposure(長時間気体へ接触する)to loud equipment. In Japan, noise pollution(騒音公害)caused by loudspeakers and other forms of city noise have forced many Tokyo residents to wear ear plugs (耳栓).
We spend more time trying to tune sound out(音を無視する) than we do trying to listen in on our world. As a result of the modern urban environment, our sense of sound(聴覚感覚)has been shut off. The first thing that teachers must consider is how to reactivate(復活させる)the student’s aural perception(聴覚認識). This requires skill and innovation (革新)in a world of noise pollution. As people who live in an urban environment, we tend to focus (中心にする)solely on our eyesight for perception while ignoring our sense of smell(嗅覚)and hearing.
Spring is a time for smells and sounds. It is also a time for new beginnings and new discoveries (発見). We need to make commitments (献身)and finish what we start. Taking time to listen to our environment can help us understand where we are not only in the physical sense but also in a philosophical sense. What is the direction of our lives? That question is an important one. We need to constantly ask ourselves this question. Having a sense of awareness (認識) is important and the spring is a good opportunity to check this. Let’s all open our ears to the wind, the rain and ourselves.
