★★ Java is not just a software program ★★

 For Europeans, coffee is a drink with a short history. It was first introduced into Europe from the Muslim world in the 1600s. It became an addiction (中毒) for Europeans. Coffee was used as the background for Johann Sebastian Bach’s(18世紀ドイツの作曲家) Coffee Cantata(カンタータ/交声曲) (1734) which was written in Leipzig, Germany where there was a serious addiction problem (中毒問題)to coffee. In Germany at the time, coffee addiction was equated with(同一視する)alcohol or morphine(モルヒネ)addiction. Less than 300 years later, coffee is wildly popular (すごく人気のある) and is still one of the world’s most popular beverages(飲物).

It is surprising to discover that in a tea drinking culture like Japan, the number of coffee shop chains has ballooned (爆発的に増加する)and coffeehouses now outnumber (より数が多い) taverns and pubs in North America. With their growth, a new culture has sprung up (次々に誕生する) with its own unique language. While most of my students are well aware(十分承知している)of the names of Starbucks coffees that are sold throughout Japan, they may not be aware of some of the new vocabulary that has entered the English language as a result of coffee culture. 
In the past, coffee has been called “joe,” “java,” “mud,” and “a-shot-in-the-arm.” Today, with the help of Starbucks, a whole new set of words such as solo, a single shot (ショットグラス一杯の) of espresso, or doppio (two shots) or triplo (three shots) has entered English. Like wine, there is a growing list of adjectives that describe coffee. The most well-known of these are the following: bitter(苦い), delicate(繊細な), caramelly, chocolaty, mellow(まろやかな), and rich(こくがある). Although the word barista is Italian, it does not mean the same thing in Italy. It was developed (新しく作り出した)in America as a derivative (派生語)of the Italian word meaning bartender and is now part of the lexicon(用語集)of all American coffee shops. In Italy, the barista typically works behind a counter, serving hot and cold alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. According to the International Coffee Organization(国際コーヒー機関ICO), the U.S. is the largest market for coffee, followed by Germany and Japan.
