★★ Hot weather can make people angry ★★
As the temperature rises, so does our temper. Summer is a season in which
tempers can wear thin (気が短くなる)when waiting in line for something.
We are all taught from an early age (幼い頃)that anger is a destructive
(破壊的)emotion. This emotion not only damages others but it
equally damages the person who is angry. When I teach my cross-cultural
(異文化)communication class, I often tell my students that there are
things that they may do in another country which may cause others to be
angry without even realizing it(知らないうちに). One thing that may
cause someone to be angry is invading personal space (接近).
Westerners have a very distinct perception (意識)of their personal space.
Personal space includes the area around (周囲)each person. How close one
person stands to another person is dependent on (による)the relationship
(人間関係)of those two people. For married couples, (夫婦)the distance
(距離)may be less than a few centimeters while for two co-workers (同僚)
the distance may be up to one meter. Personal space also includes rooms
in the home and personal property(個人ようのもの/私有). In North America,
even on the train, people do everything they can to avoid touching
(接触を避ける)or being too near another passenger. In the home,
each family member has a room with a door which they can lock.
I recently bought a video which could roughly be translated (大まかな翻訳)
as “How to make others angry”. (温厚な上司の怒らせ方). We tend to
try to establish and maintain good relationships (いい関係を保つ)with
the people around us (周囲の人たち)and do not pay much attention
(注意しない)to making others angry. Unfortunately, we often create
anger without realizing that our body language, facial expression (顔の表情)
or tone of voice (口調)can affect people and even if we do realize this
on an intellectual (知的)level we don’t internalize (内面化)it and
pay attention to our everyday language. (日常会話)After watching the video,
I realized (気づく)that, although it was recorded in Japanese,
there were many lessons to be learned for non-Japanese (外国人)as well.
I’m going to try to be more careful about my behavior (行動)and try
to have a calm, peaceful summer. I wish all of you the same.
