★★ Canada ? A Bilingual Country ★★
Although I was born in the United States, I consider myself to be both
Canadian and American if not by nationality (国籍)then at least
genetically(遺伝子的に). My mother’s parents were both born and raised
(生まれ育ち)in Canada and my grandmother was a strong influence (影響)
in my life as she lived with us until she died. I spent many summers as
a child visiting all my relatives on the small island of Newfoundland
located in the Northeast area of the Atlantic Ocean.
The “Maritime Provinces” (沿海州カナダ南東部)as they are known in
Canada are a beautiful part of the world. They include: Prince Edward
Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. The Atlantic Ocean is ferocious
(荒い波)but beautiful and there is much unspoilt (手つかず)beauty
in its forests and so many great granite boulders (花崗岩)
that stud (あちこちで)the coastline.
Canadians are not so different from Americans in that they live in
a secular society (世俗主義の社会). Like the United States, there
are a high proportion (割合が高い)of immigrants. Like Americans,
they are proud of their country and its traditions. Yet unlike the
United States, the Canadian Constitution recognizes (認める)
two languages, French and English. Remarkably(驚いたこと),
there is no official language(公用語)recognized by the US Constitution.
According to census records (人口調査), Anglophones (英語を話す人)
and Francophones (フランス語を話す人) represent roughly 59.3% and 22.9%
of the population respectively (それぞれ).
