こんにちは。ILC国際語学センターの乾です。
近頃、いろんな雑誌やテレビ番組で取り上げられて話題の
『女性の品格』(PHP新書 坂東眞理子さん著）を読みました。

坂東眞理子さんは東大出身、総理府、副知事、総領事、大学学長など、
すごい経歴をお持ちの方ですが、彼女の雰囲気は"キャリアの女性"
という強い感じではなく、とても上品な女性に思います。
この本は女性向きのタイトルがついていますが、女性だけでなく
人間の品格に大切だと感じた部分がたくさんあるので
少しご紹介したいと思います。
・魔法の言葉「ありがとう」
・ネガティブな言葉を使わない
私も以前から感じていたのですが、日本で「ありがとう」という言葉を
耳にすることが外国にいる時や外国人と接しているときより
少ないように思います。というのも、何かをしてもらったり
贈り物を頂いたときに、「すみません」や「申し訳ないです」を
代用してしまうからでしょう。
また、褒められた時も『いえ、そんなことないです』というような
否定の表現をしてしまうことが多いと思います。これは一見、
謙遜しているように聞こえますが、よく考えると、褒めてくれた人の
価値観を否定していることにもなります。内容にもよると思いますが
ネガティブな表現で返すより、褒めてもらったら素直に感謝の言葉を
返すほうが互いに心地いいようです。
そして、謙遜するために使ってしまう「私なんて」というような
ネガティブ言葉も、自分の価値を本当に下げてしまうようです。
「私」のレベルを低く設定しておくことで、周りにそれ以上を
期待させないように仕向けてしまう力があるそうです。
それより、褒められた際に多少お世辞を感じたとしても、
「ありがとうございます」と受け入れて、その褒め言葉にふさわしい
自分になるために努力するのが、品格ある人だそうです。

★★What is Samhain?★★
October is a time in Japan for eating delicious food, looking at the fall foliage
(黄葉)and enjoying the fine weather. In Europe, the days grow colder, and the light
becomes shorter. Samhain (サウェンと発音) literally (文字どおり)means “summer’s end.”
It is an Irish name for the first day of November. It is also a festival among the
ancient Celts (古代ケルト民族) of Ireland, Wales and Scotland. This festival was
dedicated (ささげられる) to the harvest(収穫) and to the dead. Samhain is a time when
the boundaries (境界）between the world of the living and the world of the dead become
thinner allowing spirits （霊魂）and other supernatural （超自然的）beings to pass
between the worlds to socialize with humans. It is a time of the year when ancestors （
祖先）are especially honored（名誉ある）.
This makes it very similar to the time of Obon in Japan. During Samhain, many bonfires
（大かがり火）were lit （火をつける）and all families would take a flame from the same
bonfire to light their hearth （暖炉）.
This festival is known to most Japanese people today as Halloween which is an
abbreviation （省略）of “All-Hallows-even”. On Halloween night in Ireland, adults and
children dress up as （見たいな格好をする）creatures （化け物）from the underworld （地
獄）(for example, ghosts, ghouls（死体を食う悪鬼), zombies, witches and goblins （小鬼
）), light bonfires, and enjoy spectacular （素晴らしい）fireworks displays （花火大会）
(despite the fact that such displays are usually illegal（不法）).
Halloween was perceived （考えられている）as the night during which the division
（境界）between the world of the living and the otherworld （来世）was blurred so
spirits of the dead were able to walk free on the earth. It was necessary to dress as a
spirit or otherworldly creature when going outdoors to blend in （溶け込める）. The
children knock on the neighbors' doors, in order to gather fruit, nuts, and sweets for
the Halloween festival. Salt was once sprinkled in （振りかける）the hair of the
children to protect against (清める)evil spirits.
Candy and toy company’s have used Halloween to make money in the United States. Mostly,
though, Halloween festivities are harmless (無害). There is no official holiday in North
America but many children enjoy going outside in the evening with their friends for
“trick or treat”.
Halloween is seen as a pagan （多神教の）event. A Pagan is someone who is polytheistic（
多神教） or a believer in many gods. This is difficult for monotheists （一神教者）to
understand and many families do not let their children participate （参加する）in the
day’s events. Still, Halloween is a fun day for many children and they enjoy drinking
hot apple cider and sharing their candy with friends and classmates.

こんにちは、ILC国際語学センターの藤原です。
最近読んだ本で、「その幸運は偶然ではないんです！」（ダイヤモンド社）
があります。その本の中で、結果がわからないときでも、
行動を起こして、チャンスをつくり、選択肢を常に多く持ち、
人生に起きることを最大限に活用することが重要だと言っています。
また、偶然の出来事を最大のチャンスに変えて、
キャリアを積んだ人たちの話が何例もあがっています。
この本では、外国人の方たちの話が主なのですが、私がILCの生徒さんと
お話する中で、日本人版というか、自分自身で幸運をたぐり寄せておられる生徒
さんが多いと感じています。
例えば、主婦の方で子供が小さく、いままでのキャリアをあきらめなくては
いけなくなった方は、在宅でもやりがいある仕事をしたい!という
意欲を持って翻訳の勉強を始められます。ここまでは、よくある話なのですが、
実際に在宅で翻訳の仕事を始めたら、自分の力不足や時間の都合もあり、
思うように仕事がはかどらないということがあります。そういったときに、
即、気持ちの転換をされて、企業で翻訳の校正の仕事して、家庭と
仕事の両立をされる、こういったケースは多いです。
家庭の仕事も大変なのに、勉強も、仕事もがんばっておられる。いつも
すごいなぁと感心させられます。ILCの紹介したお仕事でがんばっておられる
話を聞かせていただくと、私自身、うれしく思いますし、益々いい教育を
目指さなければならないと思っています。
