CDの海賊版の”海賊”の意味〜新連載コラム〜
　英語を楽しみたい人も、英語力アップを目指す人も

ILCのジョン・ノーランです。これからメルマガを月2回担当しますので、
よろしくお願いします。話は全然変わりますが、私は、違法コピーをして作った
ソフトウェアやコンテンツ映画・音楽などに、反対しています。現在日本では
この商品の販売は法律で禁止されていますが、いまでも日本のどこかで安いから
「仕方ない」という考えで買っている人が多いと思います。企業の知財やその国の
文化まで失われる可能性が高いのです。芸術家やミュージシャンたちを守りたいと
思うので、私は海賊版を買いません。皆さんはどう思いますか。
Piracy（著作権侵害）の歴史を含め、ご紹介したいと思います。

★★Piracy著作権侵害 (海賊)★★

The word pirate comes from the Latin "pirata" which means attack in English.
Since the 13th century B.C., there are records of pirates
in the Mediterranean（地中海に住む人々）.

The activity of piracy, while continuing to include kidnapping and robbery,
has come to mean the stealing of intellectual property (知的財産) such as software, and audio-visual media i.e. DVD’s and CD’s　without permission or payment of royalties.

There are copyright and patent laws for many Japanese products but this still remains an enormous problem for Japanese and other foreign companies around the world.　
Another word often associated with piracy is plagiarism (盗作) which comes from the latin
“plagairus” meaning an abductor (誘拐者). This word also means stealing someone else’s intellectual property or copying a test or other material without permission.

文法のポイント
Gerunds: “kidnapping” is a verbal noun also known as a gerund.
“while continuing to include” gerunds are used after a preposition.
For example, I will call you before leaving home.
