 ★★★ Yuletide Season ★★★

The word Yule is originally (もともと)from Old Icelandic. Yule is a winter
festival (祭)that is still celebrated (祝われます)in the Scandinavian
countries today. This festival was begun at a time when Christianity had not
replaced (取って代わられる)the older pagan (異教)religions of Europe. The Yule
festival would last twelve days and it was traditional to burn a large log (枝
を切り落とした幹本体)in the hearth (暖炉)for that period of time. When
Christianity replaced the pagan religions, it adopted (信念を抱く)many of the
early religion’s customs. One of these customs was the twelve days of Yule
which became the “The Twelve Days of Christmas” which many of you heard sung
at our annual (毎年)Christmas Party this year. The word yuletide (クリスマスの
季節)is often used as a substitute (同義語)for Christmas.

Wassail comes from Old English (5世紀半ばから12世紀初頭までの英語)words waes
hael, which means “be well”, or “good health.” A strong, hot drink usually
a mixture (混合物)of ale (ホップを効かしたビール), honey, and spices which
would be put in a large bowl, and the host would lift it and greet his
companions with “waes hael” to which they would reply “drink hael” which
meant “drink and be well.”

Santa Claus is an important part of the yuletide season. He is also known as
(別名でも知られる)Saint Nicholas. Nicholas was born in Myra which is now in
Turkey(トルコ共和国). Though many of you may know Christmas to be a day when
children receive gifts from Santa, in Belgium, Central Europe, Germany,
Russia, and the Netherlands St. Nicholas Day, which is in early December, is
the traditional day that children receive toys from Santa not on Christmas.
With the influence (影響)of American pop culture, many families celebrate
Santa Claus in the same way as they do in the United States where he visits on
Christmas Eve or December 24th. Saint Nicholas is a very important character
in Italy as well. However, he is more associated with (関係する) sailors (船員)
in some cities.

Recently, the number of Japanese families who put Christmas lights outside
their homes has increased to 1,000,000 people. In the U.S., Christmas has
become a commercialized farce (金もうけが目的の茶番)and I suppose that the
early Christmases were much more simple affairs without electricity, plastic
or parades. I wonder what people from the 19th century (19世紀に生きた人たち)
would say if they saw this year’s Christmas. Let’s hope that Santa is good
to all people no matter what age (時代)they live in.
