★★★ New Year’s Message for 2008 ★★★
Finally 2008 has arrived. I would like to take this time to extend greetings
(ごあいさつを申し上げる) from all of us at ILC. We wish you a Happy New Year.
I asked many of my friends what their hopes and dreams for 2008 were and
surprisingly most people seemed quite sanguine (楽天的)about the future though
throughout the year, conflicts (紛争)abounded (あふれていた)on almost every
continent,(大陸) particularly in the Middle East and Africa. I hope that
mankind (人類)will recognize (みとめる)that world peace is a task for each and
every (一人一人の)person. We must establish mutual respect (互いに尊敬し
合える関係)and equality with our neighbors (万人の平等). This means that we
cannot say we love peace if at the same time we also say “I hate my neighbor”.
We must realize that peace begins with us,(私たちから始まる) and we must practice
it in our daily lives.(日常の中では)
In terms of customs for the New Year, North Americans tend to celebrate New Year’s
Day in a low-key (控えめな)fashion. On New Year’s Eve, there is an event called
“First Night”. This event starts at sundown (日没)around 6:00. Galleries,
performing arts centers, concert halls, shops, cafes, restaurants and other public
venues (年越し野外)are open until midnight. There are concerts, plays, exhibitions
(展覧会)of art, speeches, poetry recitals (演奏)and many other activities. Even if
the weather is quite cold, many events take place outside in courtyards (中庭)and
public parks. At the end of the evening there is an enormous (膨大な)fireworks
display and people gather together, shake hands, hug and some even kiss one another.
The following day is rather quiet. New Year’s Day is spent at home with family.
Depending on the family, mothers cook large dinners for their families and fathers
sit in front of the television and watch parades and football games though in some
families everyone helps out. After the exhaustion of Christmas Day with it’s
binging on massive quantities of food (大食い)and alcohol, most families take
New Year’s as a time to rest. Most stores and shops are closed on that day.
I think this is quite different from how New Year’s is celebrated in other parts
of the world.
I certainly hope that all of us can attain the goals (目標を達成する)that we have
laid out (立てる)for ourselves during this New Year. I look forward to seeing
all of you in class.
