★★★ Color is an important part of human life ★★★
Color plays an important role (重要な役割)in human life. Without color,
our food is less appealing(美味しいそうに見える). We would not be able
to choose clothing or tell (区別する)a red light from a green light at
a traffic signal (交通信号). Painters use color to highlight(強調する)
their subject (絵の題), to create shadowing effects (影付け ) and to
display an overall (全体の)tone. When Isaac Newton discovered that white
light (白色光) is the source (源) of all color, he changed thousands
of years of assumptions(基礎的前提). But for those who cannot see color,
there are many problems.
People who cannot distinguish (区別できない)between certain colors are
known as (と呼ぶ)color blind (色覚異常)in English.
There are multiple forms (病型) of color blindness but the one most common
around the world is the inability to recognize (認識不能) red or green and
in other cases blue or yellow. Red-green color blindness (赤緑色覚異常)
affects men more than it does woman. From choosing socks or a necktie in
the morning to looking at images of Santa or green trees, red-green color
blindness is a constant annoyance (いら立ち). But for those people who
are completely color blind, the problem is more devastating(深刻な問題).
They cannot see any colors at all.
There is a small island southeast of Guam. It is part of Micronesia. The
island is called Pingelap. It is a small atoll (環礁島)with an even
smaller population. Pingelap is unique because more than ten percent of
the population is completely color blind (全色覚異常). They cannot see
any colors at all. They have had to develop a special vocabulary (特別な
用語)to deal with(扱う) this problem and while complete color blindness
is rare (珍しい), it is not completely absent from any given population.
According to population statistics (人口統計), 1 person in 33,000 is
completely color blind in the U.S.
Like the islanders of Pingelap, every culture has specific meanings
(それぞれの文化で色の意味は違ってくる)for each color. For example, while
white can mean pure (繊細な)in many cultures it can also mean death in
others. As language learners we need to pay attention to every detail
(の詳細に至るまで注意)of the cultural aspects of language. The use of
color, in a cultural context, is extremely important.
