★★★ Green Collar Jobs ★★★

From Los Angeles to Pittsburgh, there has been a tremendous (莫大な)loss of
factory jobs over the past twenty years in the United States. Some towns, such
as Michael Moore’s hometown of Flint, Michigan which is featured (特集され
た) in the movie Fahrenheit (華氏)911, has seen unemployment rates (失
業率) soar (うなぎ上り). With the huge number of job losses (人員削減)
across the country, many Americans have had to take part-time work or move
to other cities.

More recently, the shadow of global warming (温暖化)has taken center stage
(中心的な話題となる)and many Americans now face (立ち向かう)an
alarming increase (驚くべき増加)in the number of natural disasters (自然
災害)such as floods,(洪水) hurricanes and drought. 〔渇水〕 With all this
pressure on companies to try and comply 〔応じる〕with new environmental
laws, 〔環境法〕 and thanks to Al Gore's movie, “An inconvenient truth”,
(『不都合な真実』) a growing number have begun to focus their attention on
improving environmental quality. This has spawned 〔生み出す〕a new type of
worker, the so-called “Green Collar” worker.

Until now, the US workforce 〔労働人口〕had been divided into three types of
worker; white-collar (頭脳労働者), blue-collar (ブルーカラー労働者)and,
a third pink-collar worker. Pink-collar workers are those that do jobs
stereotypically (型どおりに)associated with women such as nurses,
kindergarten teachers etc. The Green Collar worker is a blue-collar worker
who has entered a new industry of environmental efficiency (環境に優しい
企業). This includes solar panel companies, wind turbine (風力タービン)
companies, recycling and reuse, biodegradable (生分解性) fuels, and companies
that manufacture water retrofitting (改造設計) to increase water efficiency
(水利用効率). These are all new and growing industries that may help to
re-employ many workers who have lost their jobs due to globalization. The
current number of 8.5 million U.S. jobs in renewable-energy (再生可能エネル
ギー)and energy-efficiency industries could grow to as many as 40 million by
2030.
