This is Mark Addison from the ILC. I teach conversational English at our Osaka school.
Perhaps we’ve met in the classroom before. I would like to share some of my
observations about English and Japanese with you, so I will be writing a short
column for this mail magazine. I hope you enjoy it!

In the 16th Century, the Portuguese introduced a strange new food to Japan.
At the same time, they also introduced their word for it, “pao” into the
Japanese language, which we now know as “pan (パン).” This custom of
“borrowing” words from other languages is not unique or exclusive to Japanese.
However, there is probably no language more willing and welcoming to incorporate
foreign words into mainstream use.

Today, English is the most prevalent source of these Japanese-imported words,
so it is easy for people to mistakenly assume that any borrowed word comes from
English. It is important for Japanese speakers of English to take caution when
relying on these borrowed words for their knowledge and use of English.
A traveler in a foreign country may make the order at a restaurant,
“I’d like some pan, please,” which would cause the server to think,
“A pan? Does he mean a frying pan? Why would he order that?”
Unless the traveler knows the English word is “bread,” this kind of mistake
will cause great confusion.

Another example:
アンケート which comes from the French word “enquete.” The English word is
“questionnaire.” “ankeeto” will simply not be understood in English.

このアンケートを記入してください。 Please fill out this questionnaire.

As a teacher, I am pleased that the abundance of imported English words raises
Japanese people’s consciousness of English and aids learning vocabulary.
In Japanese, I might have said the same thing by saying 「英語の意識をアップすること」.
This is also a bit alarming, as the English “up” is not used in the same way as
the Japanese 「アップする」. To “up people’s consciousness of English,”
would sound awkward.

＊「彼は自分の読む力をアップしたいと言った。」 He said he wanted to improve/boost
his reading skills.

Here are two more examples of words with English origins used in Japanese that
I often hear misused.

＊メリット　– “merit” in English means a mark of value and meaning.
This is a bit too formal to describe everyday things. The words “benefit” (便益)
and “advantage” (有利) are often the more appropriate choice.

この新型の掃除機を買うメリットが多い。 There are many advantages to buying this
new vacuum cleaner.

＊　チャレンジする：　“challenge” can be used as a verb in English, but only as
a transitive verb where the object is either the person who works hard
(or an idea being contested).

今度、私は韓国語を勉強してチャレンジしたいのです。
Next time, I want to try learning Korean.　が一般的です。

My tutor challenged me to speak clearly.
私がはっきり喋るように、家庭教師が要求しました。

As you can see, Japanese may be the most flexible language for taking in foreign words.
Just keep in mind that when challenging yourself to learn English, any word that is
imported may incur damage during shipping. “Gairaigo (外来語)” does have its merits,
but there is a distinct advantage to discovering the original source of a word,
as well as its authentic usage.
