The Trouble With You by Mark Addison

Hello again! This week, I'd like to talk about a major difference
in pronoun usage between English and Japanese, and it's all about "you."
In English, we think nothing of labeling a person as "you." As students of
Japanese, we are told from the beginning that "you" in Japanese as a direct
pronoun is usually not polite and that we should do our best to avoid using it.
However, in English we need that identifier there because complete English
sentences absolutely require a subject.

"What time do you get off of work? (何時に仕事が終わりますか？)"
"What are you going to do today? (今日は何をするのですか？)"
"You have a nice house. (素敵な家ですね。)"
In Japanese, all three of these sentences can be said without any direct labeling
of who is being spoken to. This fact was strange enough for me to digest -- that
we can simply leave "you" out of the sentence altogether. The only time something
like this occurs in English is for imperative sentences such as "Get the newspaper,
please," where there is an assumed "you" as the subject. Otherwise, leaving the
subject out would be considered colloquial speech and technically incomplete:
"Want to go to the basketball game?" has an assumed "Do you" that has been dropped
in order to make the invitation extremely informal.

The other method we are taught for addressing someone in Japanese is to replace
any instances of "you" with that person's name. This was even stranger to me
because it sounded like speaking in the third person -- about the person I was
speaking to! It would indeed be a strange sentence when telling my friend,
Mori: "Mori really likes apples, doesn't he?" The real version, "You really
like apples, don't you?" actually requires us to use the pronoun "you" -- twice.

The difference in customs make me wonder if people learning to speak English are
at all hesitant to use "you," and I'm telling you that you have nothing to worry
about -- that you can use "you" as much as you want to.

Essentially, if your sentence involves the person you are talking to, "you" is
going to show up in it. That goes for all invitations, personal questions, or
statements about that person. Here are some examples:

スーパーに行きませんか？
おいくつですか？
きれいですね！

Would you like to go to the supermarket?
How old are you?
You are so pretty!

As you can see, there are many applications for "you" and you should not be hesitant
to use it! Next time, I would like to talk more about some of the differences in
